Tricounty DFA Update: Meeting Report-- Obama Action
Hello Everyone;
In This Update:
1. Meeting Report: Obama Agenda
2. Vigil Saturday, 11am, Downtown Glens Falls
1. Meeting Report: Obama Agenda
If you watched Sarah Palin's gleefully vituperative speech Wednesday and the yowling crowd of right wingers that greeted it, you know the conservatives are not going to roll over and play dead between now and November 4th. This is a real race. We could all lose-- just focus on one point: the next President will probably appoint three Supreme Court Judges. This election matters as few before.
Right now Obama-Biden leads McCain by 17 points in New York State. Activists like us could probably raise that to 20 points, but that will not get Obama-Biden one extra vote in the Electoral College. There is no point in running up the score. Given its urgency, it's wrong to waste our efforts.
There was agreement on this at our meeting Wednesday, and we discussed what actions we can take over the next 60 days towards the all-important goal of putting a Democrat back in the White House:
1. Out of State Canvassing.
2. House Parties
3. Phone Banking (possibly-- last resort)
1. Out of State Canvassing.
Direct voter contact in person, door to door, is the most effective strategy, proven by what is now endless research and experience.
We agreed that as a group or individually we would investigate going to do voter contact work in either Pennsylvania or New Hampshire. While we were meeting, an appeal was sent out from the Obama For Pennsylvania, which many of us may have gotten, asking for volunteers there, and I have contacted them for more information.
I hope to have more on this soon.
2. House Parties
We've had many fundraising House Parties over the years, including some very successful ones for Governor Dean when he was running. If you would like to be a host, and have an appropriate space, we can do the organizing for you, which makes it really easy for you. You provide the space. This can be a lot of fun and very productive. And, needless to say, Obama-Biden is going to need the money.
If you're interested, please get back to me ASAP.
3. Phone Banking (possibly-- last resort)
It's now universally recognized that the effectiveness of phone banking is very low, and I recognize there is little enthusiasm for it. However, there may be some phone banking we could do later on in the season, and we'll keep an eye on that.
We're also open to seeing what we can do for Supreme Court candidate Bob Muller. Check out his updated website at http://www.bobmuller2008.com
2. Vigil Saturday, 11am, Downtown Glens Falls
There will be another vigil for peace and to bring our troops home, tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6th from 11am until Noon at the intersections of Bay, Glen and South Streets in downtown Glens Falls, in front of the Civil War monument. Please come and bring a sign and a friend.
And don't forget Murderball at the Rockhill Bakehouse Cafe's Friday Night Progressive Film Festival.
Thanks everyone!
Larry
