Tricounty DFA Update: LARAC Instead of Vigil, Kucinich Leads, more
Hello Everyone;

In This Update:

1. Vigil Postponed Because of LARAC Festival
2. Kucinich Introduces 35 Articles of Impeachment
3. Obama Economic Choice Raises Eyebrows
4. Friday Night Progressive Film Festival

1. Vigil Postponed Because of LARAC Festival

Because of the annual LARAC arts festival, which sprawls around City Park, and also because quite a few people have told me they are going to be away for Father's Day weekend, we are going to have to postpone our weekly vigil for peace and to bring our troops home until the following weekend, June 21st.

2. Kucinich Introduces 35 Articles of Impeachment

If you caught C-SPAN on Monday night, you saw one of the greatest and most extraordinary performances in the very long and distinguished history of the United States House of Representatives. Rep. Dennis Kucinich spent most of Monday night, almost five hours, soberly, quietly and eloquently reading and introducing 35 Articles of Impeachment against George W. Bush. Each article ended with the following magisterial paragraph:

"In all of these actions and decisions, President George W. Bush has acted in a manner contrary to his
trust as President and Commander in Chief, and subversive of constitutional government, to the
prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.
Wherefore, President George W. Bush, by such conduct, is guilty of an impeachable offense warranting
removal from office."

The full transcript can be read here: http://chun.afterdowningstreet.org/amomentoftruth.pdf

The Articles of Impeachment have been referred to committee, but a growing number of members of Congress are pushing for real hearings, and Kucinich vows to introduce them again in 30 days.

Whatever happens, this is a great, and redeeming, moral victory. It is not always possible to win. But I am reminded of Camus' The Plague, in which the real achievement of those fighting the plague was not in defeating it, but in asserting human dignity and endurance.

In this one is reminded of the eerie similarities between the conference, recently reported on, in which torture techniques were casually bandied about and discussed by high administration officials, and the transcript of the Wansee Conference, wherein the Holocaust was calmly discussed and planned.

It is high patriotism and an assertion of moral dignity to say, not in my name, which is what Kucinich said Monday for all of us.

Democrats.com is calling for action, and we can join in, too, at the very least, as an assertion of our shared dignity as Americans:

"Kucinich's heroic efforts will be in vain unless we inundate Congress with emails and calls (202-224-3121) showing our full support for Rep. Kucinich's 35 Articles of Impeachment: http://www.democrats.com/35-articles-of-impeachment

3. Obama Economic Choice Raises Eyebrows

I think it is safe to say we are all Obama backers, now. But some recent choices of his are raising concerns, and we've got to find a way to let that campaign know that change means real change in the structure of economic power, not rearranging the deck chairs for corporate America. David Sirota sent this out today:

"Obama Economic Adviser Draws Fire

"ABC News, 6/12/08

"Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., underscored his affinity with Democratic centrists this week when he tapped Jason Furman, who worked closely with former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, to be his director of economic policy.

"But the selection is now drawing criticism from some on the left who are wondering if the presumptive Democratic nominee will challenge corporate power and make good on his promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

""When people see someone like Barack Obama promise change and then see that same person make their first move the hiring of a Wall Street economic team, that’s what sows disengagement and cynicism in the public,” said David Sirota"

There is more and it is worth reading:

Tricounty DFA Update: Reminder-- Big Meeting Wednesday!
Hello Everyone;

In This Update:

1. Glen Falls DFA Meeting Wednesday
2. Big News Out Of Iowa and New Hampshire: Progressives Win!
3. McGovern Calls For Bush/Cheney Impeachment
4. NY Times Magazine On Election Machines
5. Friday Night Progressive Film Fest

1. Don't Miss Glens Falls DFA Meeting Wednesday!

1. Because of the New Year's Day holiday, we'll be holding our monthly Greater Glens Falls Area DFA meeting this Wednesday, January 9th, at 7pm at the Rockhill Bakehouse Cafe in downtown Glens Falls.

This should be a big meeting with much to discuss, including the environmental coordination and also the training initiatives we were talking about earlier, but, I am sure, most especially, the news out of the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary this Tuesday.

So if you have not been to a meeting lately, not to worry-- this is going to be like a big gathering of old friends, and new ones as well. If you are excited about what is going on, come on down!

The Cafe is on the corner of Exchange and Elm Streets and Hudson Avenue, just up from the Round-about, going towards the hospital.

2. Big News Out Of Iowa and New Hampshire: Progressives Win!

I don't have to tell anyone about the news out of Iowa or New Hampshire, but it is clear there is an earthquake underway in the Democratic Party.

DFA National pushed for a progressive win in Iowa, and they got it: Obama-Edwards, first and second, a more than 2-1 victory for progressives.

What has happened is really the continuation of what Governor Dean started five years ago-- to move the Democratic Party back to its roots and away from another "me-too" party of corporate power. Both Obama and Edwards ran smart, 21st century campaigns in Iowa, campaigns based on people power, not money power.

It is very important to note that Republican Mike Huckabee did the same thing and beat a much more heavily funded Mitt Romney. Both Clinton and Romney spent tens of millions for their poor showings.

The days of top-down campaigns, where the goal was to raise as much money as possible, in order to crash a truckload of cash into a TV station, like a suicide bombing, only for ads, has come to an end. So, too, the era of overpaid campaign consultants.

Joe Trippi, Governor Dean's former campaign manager, and now John Edward's chief campaign strategist, aptly dubbed that time the era of Broadcast Politics. It started in the 1950s with the rise of television, and it upended our democracy, turning both parties into institutions that represented rich donors, not constituents.

The purpose of television advertising is to "sell the eyeballs" of viewers to advertisers-- that's how TV stations and networks make money. Popular programs bring in more "eyeballs" to be sold. Similarly, the purpose of Broadcast Politics was to deliver voter's attention to a candidate. It was not about finding or getting elected officials to represent constituents in government. This change reversed the direction of accountability in our political system.

Like the companies that bought advertisements, those who could pay for this process actually held power, not the public, the owners of our democracy. This negative transformation caused both the corruption and gross trivialization of modern American politics. It's no wonder on issue after issue, both parties failed average Americans as our country steadily drifted to the right. As American political life degenerated and also increasingly failed to address their concerns, tens of millions of Americans, reduced to passive spectators, tuned politics out, and then dropped out of the system. Political participation was no longer part of their life.

Governor Dean talked of a Great American Restoration. Maybe now we are going to finally get it. The Obama-Edwards win is also, in every real way, Howard Dean's victory, for it is his vision of American Democracy that has prevailed. The Governor realized the answer to our political dilemma was to change the dynamics by getting discouraged voters who have dropped out to return to participating in the political process, to turn them from passive spectators, for whom politics was something they received, into participants and the joint masters of their own destiny. Bringing in tens of thousands of new people to the caucuses-- over 100,000-- is precisely what Obama and Edwards did. There looks to be a record turnout in New Hampshire as well. In this sense both are true successors to the Dean campaign.

This political earthquake is also, it should be noted, in good measure a repudiation of Hillary Clinton's votes on Iraq. Democrats expected their leaders to stand up to George Bush and his criminal war of aggression, were furious when they did not get that strong leadership, and are still upset. This failure too, ultimately, owed much to the reversal of the direction of accountability that Broadcast Politics represented.

3. McGovern Calls For Bush/Cheney Impeachment

Our 1972 presidential candidate, Sen. George McGovern, issued a clarion call today in the Washington Post to impeach both Bush and Cheney, arguing the fundamental principles of our country are more important than time left in office or convenience. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/04/AR2008010404308.html?hpid=opinionsbox1

3. NY Times Magazine On Election Machines

As we learned in 2000, and probably 2004, what really matters sometimes, as Marshall Stalin cynically observed, is not who votes that counts, but who counts the votes.

That means a "must-read" of the week is a big piece in the New York Times Magazine on voting technology, and the basic unreliability of electronic voting machines. This is something we have focused on in the past, and still will be key in the future. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/06/magazine/06Vote-t.html?_r=1&oref=slogin&pagewanted=all

In his mesmerizing new film GRIZZLY MAN, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell's remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack in the park. (The bear suspected of the killings was later shot by park officials.) In GRIZZLY MAN, Herzog plumbs not only the mystery of wild nature, but also the mystery of human nature as he chronicles Treadwell's final years in the wilderness. Herzog uses Treadwell's own startling documentary footage to paint a nuanced portrait of a complex and compelling figure while exploring larger questions about the uneasy r

Tricounty DFA Update: Holiday Wishes, Meeting Date Change, The "Great Fear" Ending?
Hello Everyone!

First, since there really won't be time (or probably interest) for another update, let me extend me the best Holiday Wishes to you all! As always in this party going season, drive safely, especially in this snow.

In This Update:

1. January Meeting Date Change -- The 9th
2. Proof The "Great Fear" Is Ending
3. Wexler Calls For Impeachment Hearings
4. Caution On Iraq "Progress"
5. Friday Night Progressive Film Festival Schedule

1. January Meeting Date Change -- The 9th

Ordinarily we meet on the first Wednesday of the month. However, this year the first Wednesday is the 2nd, the day after New Year's. Accordingly, at our December meeting, we decided to hold our monthly meeting on the second Wednesday, January 9th. Please keep this date change in mind! January 9th! I will remind everyone after New Year's.

This actually should work out well, because the Iowa caucuses will be over by then (they are on the 3rd), so that will give us something to discuss. At our November meeting we decided to defer any endorsements or action on the Presidential races until the January meeting (and there is no requirement we act at all).

As everyone is no doubt aware, the race is tightening between Clinton, Edwards and Obama with the intensity level going up, too. (Sadly, for our Kucinich and Dodd supporters, they do not seem to be catching up, for whatever reason.) What isn't getting much attention on the TV news is that it is Edwards who is now drawing the largest and most enthusiastic crowds. However, it's admittedly difficult to know how to interpret this, since there is no way of knowing for sure if those people are Iowans, or if they actually intend to leave their houses on a freezing January night and mill around for two or three hours in a caucus. In any case, it's going to be an interesting few weeks.

We will also be discussing the proposal we turn towards regional green activism (there is considerable support for that), and some training. We should also have the video of Governor Dean ready.

2. Proof The "Great Fear" Is Ending

In my update on 12/4 I predicted that the startling new National Intelligence Estimate would prove to be a "sea change." I wrote (if everyone will forgive me for quoting myself),

"Put bluntly, the intelligence agencies pulled the rug out from underneath White House warmongers. The likelihood of another or larger war in the Middle East took a huge drop, and probably now cannot happen. There no longer is any threat of a "World War Three," no mushroom clouds, no terror war, and no reason not to cooperate with Iran on resolving the mess we created in Iraq..." and,

"Without this spectre, we are eventually going to see the drawdown of the national security state that should have occurred in the 1990s after the end of the Cold War, but did not."

The N.I.E. report, and the way it blind sided the Bush White House, was a game changing event like Hurricane Katrina, one that fundamentally altered perceptions of the country, its administration and its affairs. We are already seeing the result of this shift in views: what should best be called the "Great Fear" is ending.

The phrase "Great Fear" originally came from Stalin's Soviet Union, and although it wasn't as serious here as it was in the USSR, it was real enough. Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer articulated it right after 9/11 when he cautioned Americans to "watch they they say." Under a "great fear" people come to pre-censor themselves, they cease to even try to resist or believe they can. Corrosive fear of consequences, cowardice, really, takes over and governs every action. They are beaten before they begin. We saw this in Congress all year.

But that self-imposed logjam is breaking:
*Today, under a threat of a filibuster against his own majority by Senator Dodd, the Telecom Bill granting immunity to communications companies that committed serious crimes against the rights of Americans under the Bush regime was withdrawn.
*U.S. District Court Judge Henry Kennedy ordered the Bush administration to answer allegations it destroyed evidence terrorist suspects in U.S. custody were tortured.
*U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth rejected White House claims Secret Service logs of White House visitors are private information.
*Congress passed an increase in the CAFE fuel economy standards to 35 MPG, the first rise in 32 years. They had to agree to some tax breaks, but they can always take those away later. The increase will not go away.
*Members of Congress are now also signing onto bills and amendments banning any US attack on Iraq, even though the possibility of such an attack no longer exists, making it a moot and empty gesture, but a backhanded confirmation of the existence of the "great fear, " now gone. (Rep. Gillibrand's staff was forcefully confronted by our members about the danger of an attack on Iran at our meeting last June.)
*And the possibility exists that Congress may yet live up to its commitment made earlier this year to start cutting funding for the Iraq War last September.

Would any of this happened before the fear bubble popped two weeks ago? Sometimes change, when it happens, happens fast.

A few of these sudden changes remind me of stories (apparently true) of bus accidents in New York City, where people rush to get on a bus after it's had a crash, holding their necks and writhing in pain, so they can get in on the whiplash injury lawsuits. When opportunity strikes, you have to act quickly, I guess.

3. Wexler Calls For Impeachment Hearings

The end of the "great fear" brings to the fore the next great issue: Impeachment. Will the Congress find the courage to go after "Lord Cheney," the man who tried to start a war with Iran, a war the N.I.E. proved would have been another senseless disaster like Iraq?

Even if a conviction in the Senate cannot be obtained, the principle still matters. Every member of Congress has taken an Oath of Office to defend the Constitution. Just the hearings alone, and what they would expose, would be the most vital service to democracy.

Representative Robert Wexler (D-FL) is pushing for Impeachment Hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney to begin in the Judiciary Committee. You can help him make it happen by signing his online petition.

(Thanks to Tracey at DFNYC for this!)

4. Caution On Iraq "Progress"

There are growing claims of "progress" in Iraq.

But retired Army Colonel Douglas Macgregor writing in Mother Jones argues that the surge, based as it is on American cash bribes to Sunni tribal leaders, may eventually backfire—producing more instability and possibly a regional war. According to Macgregor,

"We don't know much about developments within Iraq. Military officers who have recently served in Iraq tell me they don't truly understand Iraq's complexity or the duplicitous nature of the Iraqis they work with. In my conservations with them, they raise troubling questions that don't lend themselves to sound-bite answers on talk radio or the evening news." And,

"The Sunni insurgents are following a 'fight, bargain, subvert, fight' approach to get what they want," said one colonel. So Americans need to explore whether U.S. forces are courting long-term strategic success, or if the expedient cash surge is leading U.S. forces into a new phase of conflict that could engulf the region and create a perfect storm."... and,

"A former U.S. Army battalion commander with extensive service in Iraq reports, "It is my sense the Sunni Arab leaders are using the pause in the fight with U.S. forces to take a breather, harden and regroup themselves much like a conventional army would rest and refit after a major battle."

All this is reminiscent of Mao's Three Rules Of Guerilla Warfare, which we used to read about during Vietnam: 1. When the enemy advances, we retreat. 2. When the enemy stands, we harass. 3. When the enemy retreats, we attack.

Given that the US Army will soon be forced to retreat, because the surge is unsustainable, could we see a brutal re-surgence of the violence in the New Year? Could they resistance be just biding their time until the surge ends, to when the US Army will be vulnerable as never before? Macgregor's article is our Year-End Must Read: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/121207E.shtml

Fri Dec 21 7:30 pm ADIRONDACK PROGRESSIVE FILM FORUM!
I AM CUBA (SOY CUBA) (1964) Mikhail Kalatazov 141 min. Grade = 100%
This Russian-made study of Cuba, partially written by renowned poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, captures the island just before it made the transition to a post-revolutionary society. Moving from city to country and back again, I AM CUBA examines the various problems caused by political oppression as well as by great discrepancies in wealth and power. Beginning in Havana in the pre-Castro era, we see how foreigners contributed to the city's prostitution and poverty; this sequence features dreamy, hallucinogenic camera work that creates a feeling of unease and dislocation. Then, in glorious images of palm tress and fertile land, the film looks at the sugar cane fields in the countryside, and the difficulties faced by peasants working the land. Finally, back in the city again, leftist students battle the police and a corrupt government--and pay a high price for their rebellion.

Thanks Everyone for another great year! Have a wonderful Christmas Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! See you all January 9th!

Tricounty DFA Update: Thanksgiving Wishes, Impeachment? Washington Co. Party,Bear Pond Destuction, More
Hello Everyone;

First, a Happy Thanksgiving Holiday to you all!

In this update:

1. Grounds For Impeachment, Finally?
2. Overton Window
3. Photographic Proof Of Bear Pond Damage On French Mountain
4. Washington County Holiday Party
5. Friday Night Progressive Film Fest

1. Grounds For Impeachment, Finally?

Drew was first to send this startling piece of news along: Scott McClellan, Bush's former Press Secretary, apparently has an expose book coming out in April. Excerpts were released today that reveal McClellan knowingly lied about the exposure of CIA undercover operative Valerie Plame. What's more, McClellan reveals he knew at the time that Karl Rove, White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Lewis Libby, Cheney and Bush knew it was a lie and were in on it.

There are multiple crimes here: lying to Congress, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, perjury as well as a violation of the classification laws that protect the identities of the nation's overseas covert operatives. And unlike Iran-Contra, where Admiral Poindexter took the fall for the Reagan administration's crimes, here there is a direct witness.

McClellan says: "I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice-president, the president's chief of staff, and the president himself."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/11/19/scott-mcclellan-grabs-a-s_n_73386.html
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7105001.stm
http://apnews.excite.com/article/20071121/D8T1OGD81.html

The BBC quotes Valerie Plame today: "I am outraged to learn that former White House press secretary Scott McClellan confirms that he was sent out to lie to the press corps... Even more shocking, McClellan confirms that not only Karl Rove and Scooter Libby told him to lie but Vice-President Cheney, presidential Chief of Staff Andrew Card and President Bush also ordered McClellan to issue his misleading statement."

Will Congress finally act on this astonishing revelation? Will an actual eye witness account of grave, impeachable high crimes by the Bush administration provoke real investigations? Or will the Democrats in Congress continue to ignore their Oaths of Office to defend the Constitution, and refuse to flip over the rocks in our nation's capitol for fear of what they might find?

2. Overton Window

Something I've been reading about is closely connected to this issue: The Overton Window, and it helps explain why the political dialogue in this country has become so distorted that there can be, as the example above, questions as to how to respond to such news. It's clearly one of the keys to the success of the radical right. "The technique relies on people promoting ideas even less acceptable than the previous "outer fringe" ideas. That makes those old fringe ideas look less extreme, and thereby acceptable."

For instance, 60 years ago we prosecuted waterboarding as a war crime. Today we practice waterboarding. How did we make that move? Legal arguments by people like former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, or Jay S. Bybee, former head of the Office Legal Counsel, that torture simulating the agony caused by "major organ failure" was legal made "mere" waterboarding seem less extreme.

This is a huge part of why impeachment is such a hard sell. The right wing keeps moving the goal posts, which makes the nutty seem extreme, and then, gradually, in time, middle of the road, even commonsensical.

3. Photographic Proof Of Bear Pond Damage On French Mountain

Kathy Sonnabend sends this along about damage to Bear Pond on French Mountain. I have put the pictures up on our blog, so that everyone can see for themselves what a huge mess has been made up there, and why the pressure has to stay on! Go to: http://townmeetingday.blogspot.com/2007/11/photoraphic-proof-of-damage-to-bear.html

"Hi everyone,

"Here are just a few of the photos from yesterday morning on French Mountain, that I took from property owned by the Stranahan's and their neighbor, John Hughes. The Macchio's have lowered Bear Pond about 4 feet by damaging the beaver dam, and they have clear cutted mountain slopes and wetlands, leaving significant erosion and debry. This damage was inflicted by the Macchio's on property owned by three neighbors, the Stranahans, the Spellburgs and the Hughes. I am told that the damage on property legally owned by the Macchio's is even worse, and the Macchio's activity has continued despite the June 2006 Queensbury stop work order.

"Dan Stec must be urged to rigorously pursue the town's lawsuit and not drag his heels or settle lightly to please Michael O'Connor. O'Connor has gotten himself into trouble as the attorney involved in the illegal transfer of Stranahan property to Macchio, which was recently overturned by Judge Krogman. It was that ruling which allowed me to tour the returned Stranahan property yesterday morning with John Strough, Tony Metivier and several private citizens. Skip Stranahan is happy to take any of you on a similar tour. If you don't have four wheel drive, Doug Auer is also happy to drive anyone up there to see first hand.

"The town must deal with this decisively and harshly, to prevent this from becoming a precedent in Queensbury that will spoil our vistas and damage our environment. Otherwise, our quality of life will suffer and taxpayers will bear the financial cost of repairing washed out roads and other damage from storm water runoff.

"Kathy"

RUNNING ON THE SUN (2003) Mel Stuart 102 min. No Grade Available
The Badwater 135 is the most extreme foot-race on earth. The 135 mile course runs over barren desert, taking in three mountain ranges, some extremely tough terrain, and soaring temperatures of up to 130F. With the added perils of flash floods and wind storms along the way, it is a miracle that anyone is capable of finishing the gruelling course. This documentary tracks 13 of the brave, or perhaps foolhardy, runners, and runs the full gamut of human emotions with them, from joy to despair, and elation to disappointment. The pa! rticipants push the limits of human endurance beyond that of most extreme sports participants, and up the ante for enthusiasts of the genre everywhere.
